Probably you have experienced from time to time that your Windows PC (desktop or laptop) felt a little bit sluggish than usual.
Probably some of you thought:
“My computer is getting slower these days. I think it needs to be reformatted.”
Before you bring your computer to a technician and have it reformatted, I want you to know that reformatting your computer is not the only solution! In fact, reformatting is the worst solution. There is a better alternative without reformatting.
What is the cause of the slow down?
Before I share with you what to do, let’s first take up the possible cause(s) of the problem.
Viruses or Malware.
One possible cause why your computer slows down is it could be infected with a virus or malware. All you need is to have updated anti-virus software and clean your computer. Personally, I am recommending Avast Free Anti-Virus. It’s fast and it is free.
If your computer does not have one installed, probably you can call a technician and have one installed and clean your computer. But again, don’t let the technician convince you to have your computer reformatted right away.
Your PC is Filled with Junk!
Every time you use your computer, especially when you access the Internet, your computer stores temporary files, memory dumps, and all sorts of digital garbage.
Installing and uninstalling programs oftentimes leave residual files on disks and on the registry which could make your computer run slower.
Some programs tend to install a launcher on startup. This launcher starts the program or part of the main program when your computer starts. This would make your computer start slower.
How to make your computer run fast again.
The solution is to clean up your computer. So far, one of the best (if not the best) utility that I have used for this purpose is Piriform’s CCleaner.
What can CCleaner Do?
CCleaner can quickly clean up the junk left by the operating system. It can also remove unnecessary startup programs to significantly boost or shorten startup time.
- CCleaner can clear the following:
- Recycle Bin
- Temporary System Files
- Temporary Internet Files
- Temporary Application Files
Clean Your Registry
Cleaning the Registry manually is not recommended. One major mistake could cause a hard-to-repair error. CCleaner, however, can identify registry entries that are left behind by uninstalled programs and other erroneous entries and delete them.
For additional safety, CCleaner will back-up the registry first before applying the modifications.
Control Startup Programs
With CCleaner, you can also control the programs that will allow you to run during startup (when the operating system boots). Doing this will significantly decrease your boot time, especially if you have a low capacity computer.
These are just some of the things that you can do with CCleaner. And that’s just the free version. The Pro version offers additional features like keeping your browsing history private, delete trackers, and a lot more!
